Memecoins: fun, fraud and fortunes in crypto’s wild west

One day a joke, the next a billion-dollar coin, and then often zero. Why memecoins explode every cycle, how people get trapped, and how to play safely if you play at all.

Key takeaways
  • A memecoin’s value comes from story, community and attention, not technology.
  • A few early buyers win big. Most late buyers are left holding the bag.
  • Rug pulls and influencer pump-and-dumps are common. Most memecoins go to zero.
  • Treat memecoins like a casino ticket: tiny amounts, early profit, no chasing.

01What memecoins are

Memecoins are tokens inspired by internet jokes and trends. Unlike bitcoin or Ethereum, they usually don’t solve any technical problem. They live on hype, community and social media attention.

  • Dogecoin (DOGE): created as a joke in 2013, later pushed by Elon Musk.
  • Shiba Inu (SHIB): launched as a DOGE rival and reached billions in market cap.
  • Pepe, Bonk, WIF and many more: viral tokens born from memes.

02Why people buy them

  • FOMO: “What if this is the next Dogecoin?”
  • Lottery thinking: a tiny amount could go 100x.
  • Belonging: holding the coin feels like joining a movement.
  • Entertainment: trading becomes a game.

Memecoins are less about finance and more about culture.

03How the fortunes happen

Every bull run, a few memecoins explode: DOGE in 2017 and 2021, SHIB in 2021, Pepe and Solana memecoins in 2023–24. Stories of $100 turning into $10,000 spread fast and bring in more buyers. The catch: most of the money is made by the few who buy very early and sell fast.

04The dark side

  • Rug pulls: the developers disappear with the money.
  • Pump and dumps: influencers hype a coin, then sell on their followers.
  • No floor: most memecoins go to zero once the attention moves on.

If you are late to the party, you are usually the one holding the bag.

05Red flags before you buy

  1. A few wallets hold most of the supply.
  2. Liquidity isn’t locked, or the developers can mint more tokens.
  3. You can buy but the contract makes selling hard or expensive.
  4. Paid promotions and “guaranteed 100x” posts everywhere.
  5. You only heard about it after it already went up a lot.

06If you still want to play

  • Only money you can lose completely. Think casino, not investment.
  • Take profit early, at least your initial amount.
  • Don’t chase trends. By the time it is trending, early holders are selling.
  • Use a separate wallet for memecoins, never your main savings wallet.
