How to secure your crypto: a simple checklist before something goes wrong

Most of the cases I see could have been prevented. Hardware wallets, seed phrase backups, 2FA and clean devices, in plain language, plus what your family would need if something happened to you.

Key takeaways
  • Don’t keep more on an exchange than you trade with.
  • A hardware wallet, bought new from the official store, protects long-term savings.
  • Back up your seed phrase on paper or metal, never in your phone, email or cloud.
  • Use an authenticator app for 2FA, not SMS, and secure your email first.
  • Make sure someone you trust could reach your crypto if something happened to you.

01Why this matters

Most of the stolen-funds and lost-wallet cases that reach me could have been prevented with a few basic steps. None of them are technical. They just need to be done once, properly.

021. Decide what stays on the exchange

An exchange is fine for what you actively trade. Long-term savings are safer in a wallet you control. If the exchange freezes your account or gets hacked, only what you left there is at risk.

032. Use a hardware wallet for savings

  • Buy it new, sealed, from the official store or an authorised seller. Never second-hand.
  • Set it up yourself. A device that arrives with a seed phrase already written is a scam.
  • Send a small test amount first, then the rest.

043. Back up your seed phrase properly

  • Write it on paper, or better, on a metal backup that survives fire and water.
  • Never store it as a photo, in notes, email, WhatsApp or the cloud.
  • Keep it in a safe place, and consider a second copy in a different location.
  • Check the spelling of every word against the word list.

054. Lock down 2FA and email

  • Use an authenticator app for 2FA, not SMS. SIM swaps are a real risk.
  • Secure your email first: a strong unique password and 2FA. Whoever controls your email can reset most of your accounts.
  • Use a different password for every exchange, and a password manager.
  • Turn on withdrawal address whitelisting and an anti-phishing code on your exchange.

065. Keep your devices clean

  • Don’t install cracked software or “free” trading bots.
  • Don’t sign transactions or connect your wallet to sites you don’t know.
  • Keep your phone and computer updated, and don’t share devices used for crypto.

076. Plan for your family

If something happened to you, would anyone know your crypto exists, and how to reach it safely? A simple, private inheritance note (where the backup is, which wallets and exchanges you use) can save your family from losing everything.

09Questions people ask

Which hardware wallet should I buy?

It depends on what you hold. Choose a well-known brand and buy only from the official store or an authorised seller.

Where is the safest place to keep my seed phrase?

Offline, on paper or metal, in a safe place you control. Never as a photo, in email or in the cloud.

Is it safe to keep crypto on Binance?

For what you trade, with strong security, it is common. For long-term savings, a wallet you control removes the exchange risk.

10Want it set up properly?

I help individuals, families and businesses holding meaningful amounts set this up in one session, in person or online: hardware wallet, backups, 2FA, devices and an inheritance plan. I never need your seed phrase. See how fund security setup works.
