Bitcoin vs Ethereum: what each one is really for

One is called digital gold, the other the world computer. They are not rivals doing the same job. Here is what makes each one different, in plain words.

Key takeaways
  • Bitcoin is built to be scarce, secure money: 21 million coins, no CEO.
  • Ethereum is a programmable platform for DeFi, NFTs, stablecoins and apps.
  • Bitcoin uses proof of work. Ethereum switched to proof of stake in 2022.
  • They do different jobs, so the real answer is often “both”.

01Bitcoin: digital gold

Bitcoin launched in 2009, created by the anonymous Satoshi Nakamoto, as peer-to-peer digital cash. Over time it became something bigger: a store of value.

  • Scarcity: only 21 million BTC will ever exist.
  • Security: the most secure blockchain, protected by miners all over the world.
  • Decentralisation: no company, no CEO, no central authority.

02Ethereum: the world computer

Ethereum launched in 2015, led by Vitalik Buterin. It took bitcoin’s idea and added programmability: developers can build smart contracts and apps that run on the blockchain. That opened the door to:

  • DeFi: lending, borrowing and trading without banks.
  • NFTs: digital ownership of art, music and collectibles.
  • DAOs: organisations run by code and token votes.
  • Stablecoins and whole networks built on top of it (layer 2s).

03How they are secured

  • Bitcoin, proof of work: miners use computing power to secure the network. Extremely secure, but energy-hungry.
  • Ethereum, proof of stake (since 2022): validators lock up ETH to secure the network. Far less energy, more room to scale.

The choice shows their philosophy: bitcoin chooses security and simplicity, Ethereum chooses flexibility and innovation.

05Not a war

People love to ask who wins. The honest answer: they aren’t really competing. Bitcoin is the savings layer of digital money. Ethereum is the building layer where new financial apps live. Together they form a parallel financial system.

06My take

  • If you believe in money no government can print, start with bitcoin.
  • If you believe in an internet of financial apps, learn Ethereum.
  • For most long-term investors, both have a place.
  • Whatever you choose, understand what you own before you buy it.
