Spot vs futures explained: how they work, the risks, and real examples

You have seen the Futures tab and wondered what it is. Here is the difference from spot trading, how leverage and liquidation really work, and why to walk before you run.

Key takeaways
  • Spot: you buy and own the actual coin. The most you can lose is what you put in.
  • Futures: you trade a contract on the price, long or short, usually with leverage.
  • At 10x leverage, a move of about 10% against you can wipe out your whole margin.
  • Master spot first. If you try futures, use 2–3x and money you can fully lose.

01Spot trading: you own the coin

Spot is what most people mean by “buying bitcoin”. You pay today’s price and the coin is yours. You can hold it, sell it later or withdraw it to your own wallet.

It is like changing dollars for euros at an exchange office: you hand over dollars, you walk away with euros.

  1. Go to Spot and pick a pair, like BTC/USDT.
  2. Place a buy order with your USDT.
  3. The BTC lands in your spot wallet. You own it.
  • Good: simple, real ownership, and the most you can lose is what you put in.
  • Limit: you only profit when the price goes up.

02Futures trading: you trade a contract

With futures you don’t buy the coin. You trade a contract that follows its price. In crypto the most common type is the perpetual, which has no expiry date. Two things change everything:

  • Long or short: go long if you think the price will rise, short if you think it will fall. You can profit in a falling market, and lose in a rising one.
  • Leverage: open a position bigger than your money. With 10x, $1,000 of your own controls a $10,000 position.

03Example: a 10x long

  1. Move $100 USDT from spot to your futures wallet. This is your margin.
  2. Open the BTCUSDT perpetual and set leverage to 10x.
  3. Tap Buy/Long. Your $100 now controls a $1,000 position.
BTC movesYour positionResult on your $100
+10%$1,000 → $1,100+$100, a 100% gain
−5%$1,000 → $950−$50, half your margin
About −10%$1,000 → about $900Liquidated, the $100 is gone

04The risks, read carefully

  • Liquidation: when losses eat your margin, the exchange closes your position automatically. In practice it happens slightly before the full 10%, because of maintenance margin and fees.
  • Higher leverage, smaller room: at 50x, a move of about 2% against you can wipe you out.
  • Leverage cuts both ways: it multiplies losses exactly as fast as gains.
  • Funding fees: perpetuals charge small payments between longs and shorts every few hours. Hold for weeks and they add up.

06My golden rules

  • Walk before you run. Master spot, charts and a strategy first.
  • If you try futures, start at 2–3x leverage with an amount you are fully ready to lose.
  • Always set a stop-loss before the liquidation price.
  • Never add margin to “save” a losing trade.
